Crowns

A dental crown, sometimes called a cap, is a tooth-like covering placed over a carefully prepared existing tooth. Used to strengthen, restore or improve the appearance of your natural tooth, a crown is placed on an individual tooth much like a thimble over your finger.

In addition to being used to strengthen a tooth to accommodate the attachment of a fixed bridge, crowns serve may functions. One of the most common is to support the tooth when there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. Crowns may also be used to protect the structure of a tooth that is fractured, cracked or has had root canal treatment.

Our crowns are made from only superior materials. Both appearance and function are considered when selecting the material most suitable for you:

  1. Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) - Made from a precious metal substructure with a porcelain covering. This type of crown not only has strength, but is also esthetically pleasing. We make our PFMs with a porcelain margin so you never see the gray gum line in your smile.

  2. Porcelain Jacket Crown (PJC) - Made completely out of porcelain. PJCs have sufficient strength for back teeth in only certain situations, but can provide an esthetically superior result for most front teeth.

  3. Full Gold Crown (FGC) - Made only from precious metal, FGCs are still the gold standard in strength and durability.

  4. Zirconia Crown - An esthetic tooth-colored material which combines the strength and durablility of a metal crown with the improved color and translucency of natural dentition.

Some dental offices may offer you non-precious nickel-based or stainless steel crowns. Pacific Beach Dentistry will only provide you with the highest quality materials available.

If you have old crowns and are unhappy with their appearance, we can fabricate new and improved crowns today that blend naturally with your teeth and can be virtually undetectable.
